Life Is a Bed of Roses (La vie est un roman)
35mm print from New Yorker FilmsDir. Alain Resnais. 1983, 110 mins. With Vittorio Gassman, Geraldine Chaplin, Fanny Ardant. In one of his most audacious time-hopping experiments, Resnais links stories from three different time periods, all set in the same futuristic château. A rich Utopian builds a refuge, just before the outbreak of World War I; in 1982, the building is a school for intellectuals studying “The education of the imagination;” further in the future, two children turn it into a fantasy world of damsels and dragons.
