Croatia. Dir. Tomislav Mrsic. 2013, 107 mins. With Sasa Anocic, Zivko Anocic, Matija Antolic. The Wild West and Eastern Europe collide in this infectious Croatian comedy. After a series of personal and professional setbacks, a prominent stage director returns to the bleak industrial town where he grew up and is immediately recruited to mount an amateur theater production. But what starts as a hilariously ill-advised cowboy musical with a hopelessly talentless cast turns out to be a transformative experience for all involved. Croatia’s Academy Awards entry for Best Foreign Language Film “is a nifty blend of social drama and absurdist comedy… Just hearing the name Johnny Nebraska uttered with a Croatian accent is pretty entertaining” (Variety).
