Dir. Steven Spielberg. 1971, 90 mins. 35mm. Dennis Weaver, Jacqueline Scott, Eddie Firestone. In Spielberg’s feature debut, an unassuming nerd motorist (Dennis Weaver) in a red Valiant is pursued through burnt California landscapes by a tanker truck piloted by a never-seen, highly aggressive driver with a bone to pick. Made for television (and nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Movie Made for TV), and lengthened for a theatrical international release, the film is spectacular on the big screen, a largely wordless symphony of road and machine that immediately established Spielberg as one of the medium’s most exciting visual storytellers.
